The most recognizable difference between Mexican Hat (Ratibida columnifera ) and Naked Mexican Hat ( Ratibida peduncularis) is the leaves of R. columnifera go most of the way up the stalk near the flower. In R. penduncularis the leaves or mostly near the base with the flower high above on a "naked" stalk. In this picture of my Mexican Hat you can see how high the leaves go. This link is to a good picture of Naked Mexican Hat that shows the naked stalks.
