I've often thought the reason raspberries are relatively expensive at nurseries is because of their running habit. That said, I've maintained a row along one edge of my herb garden for many years and have not had too much trouble just pulling the runners that sneak into places they don't belong. The other side of the raspberry bed is an open field and I've not had them move into that area aggressively. We did run livestock in the field for many years (cows and/or horses), but have not had any farm animals for about 4-5 years now. My husband runs the brush hog along the fence line a couple times a season, but not on any sort of regular basis. I don't find the runners difficult to just yank out. I don't have any clue what variety of raspberry I have, though, they were planted 30+ years ago from starts I got from my sister.
