Soapy water also works great, not as a repellent, but if you do see some actual insects. About a tsp. of dish soap to a quart of water kills 'em.

I like to wait to spray until I actually see the bugs.

I've never heard of been oil, did you mean Neem oil? It's very good, but expensive. I'd save it for when you really need it.
