Something I had not considered but which might apply in chalyse's case, here is a quote from Olallie Daylilies about growing in the shade!
"Daylilies will not bloom well in the deep shade of trees. exception: Daylilies on a shady side of a house may bloom very well in the indirect light that is reflected off of the building."
