I plant a couple to three inches. The risk of planting too early is the cold and damp can rot the bulbs ( talking three weeks or late April ) . I have never had a problem with growth or anything.
I alsomark where the bulbs are so I dont plant annuals on top of them.
Good luck, once you start to grow them you will be hooked.
