My best bleeding heart is a common variety volunteer. Where it self-sowed from... I haven't a clue. It's been in its present location for a few years now. I wanted to move it, but, until last summer when we started some renovation work on our old house, the plant had been growing between cracks in a couple of concrete slabs. Now, at 3 feet tall, it's just more than I want to tackle. The rock retaining wall behind it is on its West side, so it is sheltered from prevailing winds. It has Eastern and Southern exposures. I wish my other bleeding hearts did half as well.
(Sorry I didn't take the time to clean up the photos. Construction work still ongoing.)
