I had a look into the database and think there are photos of different clones;
Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Flamingo')

one is smooth:


another is velvety:


in germany we only know the smooth one - the colour is from a dark violet to pink;

the mother of 'Flamingo' is S. tectorum 'Atroviolaceum'
Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum tectorum 'Atroviolaceum')

so I think it has to be smooth and dark in spring....the velvety one gets green to autumn - never seen at 'Flamingo'
