Dave -- I'm not skilled at the cropping, etc. -- if I can't go out and photograph it, it ain't gonna get photographed. Green Grin! The beard-shots (both beard and throat) that I've been taking have been intentional photographs of just that part of the Iris. No tripod -- just holding as still as I can. I also have an old camera -- also purchased on Ebay -- mine's a Konica Minolta DiMage G600. It sure tries hard to take a good picture, given half a chance.

I'm glad you differentiated between a beard shot and a throat shot -- although I'm already struggling with definitions. If you take a head-on picture of just the beard, sort of below so that you're not showing any of the inside of the bloom -- is it still a throat shot?
