With adequate water and light I can get pretty close to the sizes you talk about. In my experience, especially for those of us further north, it's a desirable trait upon receipt because those plants will often divide into multiple fans. Getting increase with a shorter growing season is more difficult than getting plants to plump up.

For example, I received a gigantic single fan of RANDY STEPHENS this spring. It has since put up a marvelous looking scape and divided into 3 fans. I can tell you that without the plant being as large as it was to begin with, that wouldn't have happened. I would have been lucky to see blooms this season and would likely have 1, maybe 2 fans next spring.
