Anytime a plant look like it is starting to give up the ghost I pull it, put it in a pot in bright shade and give it a bit of water...unless the roots/dirt are saturated, in which case no water. New plants from end of May on go into pots in bright shade and I put them in the ground in the spring. (My beds are too big to do a shade cloth, which would also work). They seem to get stressed in the summer sun and either shrivel up or start sending up a bloom stalk. This is in Oregon.
