It appears to be a plant that would sport. The leaves are probably not stable and prone to change and morph into different colors.
I keep going back to Hostas because it is a plant that I have grown for so long and all the different sports that come from one plant is amazing. One day it is one plant and the next year you have sprouts on the plant that is a totally new plant.
I would think that is why it has so many different names with slight variance. The black cherry pics that I did see it did look like a black cherry at least on the back of the leaves.
