Gerry, to me hybridizing it is kind of like breeding horses.
I look for certain features and strengths.
Run back a few generations and see what the relatives have done.

At my age now, I don't expect to be doing hybridizing for that many years,
so will rely on a friend's philosophy of "If you have luck, mush will do for brains."
