I have done both. We get LOTS of volunteers from the peony poppies, but I sometimes start particular ones indoors in March with equal success. I haven't had the same luck with California poppies. Since they're native to a warmer climate, they may not like those long cold winters!
Confidence is that feeling you have right before you do something really stupid.
