Ken, the only thing they might have in common is a nice caudex, if one might look at young Ponytail palms.
The Adenium obesum came from Africa/Sub Sahara and belongs to the family of Apocynaceae, the Oleander family.
Ponytail Palms/ Beaucarnea recurvata are from the Asparagaceae family and they originated in Mexico. A total different thing.
Traveling around Thailand you see Adenium obesums everywhere in all sort of shapes and sizes. That should give you an idea of what climate they love.
