We have severe drought all over the central valley, and the governor just announced a mandated 25% reduction in water usage. But we do have the Kern River here so we're not in an immediately horrible situation like those in the western half of the San Joaquin Valley. But I've already cut way back and have three good-sized beds designated for seedlings that last year I just turned off the water to, and I'm leaving them empty. We're going to only be able to water twice a week, and in our 100+ degree summer days no one thinks that will be enough.

I'm getting those saucers for all my pots that I have on tables, plus I'm going to stick pots between all the plants in my oriental garden and flower beds -- and heavy mulching! But if this drought continues I may just have to give up daylilies -- terrible thought, but a frighteningly real possibility now. I'm already at the point where I don't want to give up any of the 700 that I have, so I can't even imagine the tough decisions that probably lie ahead -- but they said last week that California only has enough water in reservoirs and the water table for one more year...

I sure wish they would think about building big water pipelines from the east to California so we could make use of all that extra water people back east have been getting!
