Should be really nice looking. As long as you do not drill all the way through I do not think insects would be anymore problem then hanging baskets. You could always spray the wall behind planters with something like Home Defense . Bricks should be easy to drill into with the right bit, but I would watch the weight of planters as bricks are not as strong as stone.
