I became obsessed with these suckers last year and bought a LOT from smg....sooooo... a toddler and a 6yr old played musical tags with my name tags :/
....then the tags vanished completely so I've got a lot of "I dunno who u are but your pretty" going on. Smiling tons of babies happening for spring so far!
I just visited your "most prolific" post a moment ago before placing a new smg order. I've got a little beef with them as many of my plants BLOOMED last year and I was watching and loving....till they died :/ lol. So yeah I got used up hens.....The ones that bummed me most were bought as small varieties for a specific container (and I was very careful about my soil etc...I really have a green thumb! Honest!) and they did beautifully all summer in this terrible Alabama heat....I had mixed reviews from the locals about leaving them out in the weather or bringing them inside....so I left some out....put some on the porch and some had the sunniest window I could find in the house. ("Some" being all semps in general but the 3 small varieties I had tried the same 3 spots but those 3 semps failed.... I'm sure y'all can guess who the other winners were Smiling the ones outside covered in ice at times. The porch dwellers were okay but I was too afraid to over water so I think they were under watered.....they have much improved since moving them OUT into the weather. The indoor guys didn't DIE but also didn't thrive....they are now recovering fine....but what I cannot Understand was how nearly every "main" chick smg sent me bloomed prior to winter???....I left them be....but their offsets that CAME with the plant didn't make it and ZERO new offsets were gained from ANY I bought last season and I began buying sooner last year and bought monthly until June....
the ones I had actually worried about have been the ones to put on a show!! They were tiny cuttings verses "named" specimens.
:/ the ones in individual bags with name (*cough* that my kids played tag war with me) were the ones I lost the most of....and with all the changes in color etc to what I've got left I doubt I will ever be able to know if it was an offset that once had a tag or was a bitty baby from a cutting.
*sigh*. I made really pretty containers and mixed them in....but had kept like with like and each tag near each plant. My kids loved these too apparently :)
So yeah.....rambling aside I'm hawking you guys for fast growers that won't mind the heat (yes I move em out of direct sunlight when it's hottest to avoid sunburn) and will live well in their containers over winter outside with temps sometimes dipping to 3-5 with occasional icing or snow. I wish I could say I have a place to collect these AWAY from little hands but if they see something other than a plant or a pot decoration?!? They are snagging it. I even painted names on rocks....pretty rocks mom. "Look what I found" lol.
Short of drawing a diagram of each pot....using a sharpie to add numbers UNDER THE POT Where they dwell and a matching number to the rock I attempt to use to "tag" them I doubt I will have luck with names. Smiling but you guys post great info and a huge thank you for the seasonal photos so I can see "what pretty" MIGHT look like later lol.
Side note.....is it odd that the semps I brought home from Home Depot or walmart did so much better than any I ordered from smg??
