Yes, it's really interesting the different plants and then the overlap of what I grew in SoCal that also does well up here. The other interesting thing is that the climate has changed here...when I talk to someone who's grown up here and has had a nursery, she knows what she's talking about...BUT...a lot of people who are used to "what used to be" have not recognized that there are a lot more plants that can be grown here than they're used to ...pushing the zone is a lot easier now also and they fail to see that they're missing the market for a whole range of plants that there is a market for...this person is 5 miles inland from me and her climate is slightly different from mine...with the climate change in the last howwever many years they've been able to grow pumpkins, whereas they did not do well before. I may have to try pumpkins at my place to see how they do.
Variations in climate also, as in SoCal, anywhere along the coast versus 15-20 miles inland. We may be 65 here today, but inland at Gasquet, it will be in the 80's....(where I could grow my Fuyu persimmons...sigh). I also do not ant temps in the 80's, however. Persimmons may like it, but I don't.
Time to go out and dig.....
Our friend from DG (rebeccanne) is not really active now on ATP, but she's the only one who's had a nursery here carrying tons of unusual plants...a lot of Aussies, etc. that grow well here and standard (boring) nurseries don't get this stuff...she's now retired and this has left a large number of people who want what she carried and they're unable to find around here.
