Without better pics it's really hard to 100% guarantee what species that is, it looks like a brown snake or a garter snake, both species show lots of variation.
Whatever it was, it's no threat, they rarely even open their mouths at me... They are happy to excrete a lovely smelling goo from their anus, a pretty good defense mechanism really.
Small snakes usually feed on insects, so having a few of those in your strawberries would be good!
