@kmtmimi to ATP. It looks like you are in zone 7a if you in NE AL, 7b if you are in NW AL. I'm talking the most extreme northern parts of the state. I am in 8a central AL and I grow Ice Cream banana. The foliage does not survive our winters, but the roots do. No mulch necessary. I too have sandy soil, my banana is located on the south side of the house . Full sun from am to pm. Bananas love water and fertilizer and sun.
This photo was taken last summer, it topped out at 13 ft before winter.

I have grown many other bananas but this is the only winter survivor. Good luck in your adventure!
