Donald, boy, are you brave, just jumping in like this! I hope you checked out that eBay link.
I used to make macrame plant hangers also. I don't remember how to do the measurements between knots either. I USED to have a craft book that did tell you how to do it for any size pot. Alas, I don't remember the name of it.
I know you said you want to keep your designs simple, but take a look at Jeannes' designs again, they are very sturdy as well as being beautiful!
You have big containers! You need a
bigger knotted "cradle" to hold your pots safely. I guess what I'm trying to say is, try to run down some old macrame craftbooks. There were a lot of books that specialized in just plant hangers. There is a bead store called Shipwreck beads that had a stash of old macrame craftbooks from the seventies everything from jewelry to wall hangings to plant hangers. It might be worth your while to check it out.
