. It looks a lot better than the poor iris in the high temps of a drought summer. The iris pretty much go dormant in the summer anyway (these are arilbred iris) and too much water on them is not good, so these plants make a nice, cooling cover. There are three natives here and I've grown all three in containers. This one worked the best. The others are purslane - I think. One is commonly called pigweed and has yellow flowers and is capable of making a dense mat of foliage. The other isn't as aggressive as a grower and has larger, orange blooms that I like a lot. As container plants, the ones I think are purslane didn't last as long or look good as long as this one in the photo did. It lasts until frost knocks it down. The others seemed to do their thing until they made a lot of seed and then got ratty. I should have photos of those too, but I can't find them either. I have too many photos and too many folders.
