I think when scapes have proliferations, they stay green instead of withering away like a spent scape. Just like when they have pods. They don't shrivel away until the pods mature are or removed. The scape on mine stayed green below where the prolifs grew. When the prolifs got bigger I cut them off. The scape was still green.
