Alex, canoeing refers to the edges(margins) of the segments curling inward toward the upper surface. The botanical term would be involute. Sometimes you can follow a line of daylilies that appear to carry this trait. We had a brief discussion in the thread linked below about it last year...

This was the seedling I was referring to as exhibiting the trait. It may get better, new sdlgs sometimes have trouble getting their act together the first year.
