If you pull it from the database but then change the name, it will lose the link to the database.

This is a design feature. It lets you customize the name of the plant so you can do things like "Daylily Foo X Bar" and then of course that's now a different plant than what you originally selected.

If you want it to link to the database, choose the plant from the pulldown and then don't edit the name.
