So many people have different experiences and success with these, even within the same zone. So other factors can easily make a difference here. Don't know what species you tried, Woofie, but I was just reading a bit on a Swedish forum about cyclamen and further up north (I'm in the south) many had positive experiences with Cyclamen purpurascens . True in one sense it may not be as easy to cultivate as C hederifolium but the extra hardiness could be worth it. There was also many that had planted late in autumn with very disappointing results.
