NEW SEASON 2017!
Posted on Mar 20, 2017 3:52 PM

I am so ready for the taste of fresh tomatoes!

I am only trying 2 kinds from seed this year. I have planted 1 Bloody Butcher & 3 Country Taste. I really hope to not have all the troubles I had last year. The rest of our tomatoes will be from plants that I will purchase. Hurry up May!

The End!

We have our first Frost Advisory of the season tonight. I have picked all the tomatoes that I thought have a chance to ripen and brought them inside. So this is the official end of tomatoes for 2016. Over all it was a success and I can't wait until next May to start all over again!

Mid October!
Posted on Oct 17, 2016 1:11 PM

This week will be the end of the season for us. With the unseasonably warm weather we have had it has extended us a little. I am usually completing cleanup by this date.

Our warm weather is going to hold out until Thursday. Fridays high is predicted to be 58! So I will leave tomatoes on until Thursday evening. I will bring in whatever looks like it has a shot at getting ripe inside. I did pull off all the dead stuff today and cleaned up a little today.

Over all, it was a successful season! I found out DH is really not fond of yellow tomatoes after all these years. So I will have to make some changes next year I guess. :)

Mid-September
Posted on Sep 19, 2016 2:04 PM

Still picking tomatoes but production is slowing down. Even the Sweet 100 cherry is slow now.

Yesterday's count was 43. A couple of those look like may have to be tossed.

Plants are starting to look ragged finally. All spotty, but it is September 19th!

September!

September 6 and the plants are still producing! The count today was at 62+ tomatoes. The Golden Girl plants have slowed considerably. I found online that they are determinant. The Rutgers have been slow but steady. The fruit over all has gotten a little smaller, but there are still some nice size fruits still out there waiting to ripen.

My family of Eastern Phoebes had done a pretty good job with bug control. However, they have now left, so the last week I have been on my own. After finding numerous Stink Bugs last night & 3 more hornworms this morning, I decided to spray this evening. This only the second time the season. I try to use as little chemicals as possible, but sometimes it is necessary.

The plants do not look great but not too bad considering our hot summer (27 90 degree days- average is 15) and the hornworms. Much better than a lot of years! I will let them go until I am sure we are running out of time for the season. I want every tomato I can get! :)
