Mary Todd Daylilies bloomed today
Posted on Jun 11, 2012 10:49 AM

Oh, what beauties the Mary Todd daylilies are! Gifted to me at the Fall plant swap last year by John and Ruby..they started blooming today and gosh, their blooms are so large..beauties indeed! I was trying to cut some other plant foliage and accidently knocked on of the MT blooms off. Felt like crying but quickly took it inside and put in water in a vase so I could enjoy it if only for today. Hearts Afire probably will bloom soon as I see some buds showing. It is a much smaller plant but maybe MT is a more mature plant.

Our local hospital has an annual picnic and there is some local nurseries or private citizens that cell daylily and iris plants..might check it out for more daylily plants. I think our Garden Club is planning a Fall plant sale, maybe somebody will be dividing or sell some of theirs.

Things I managed to accomplished today
Posted on Jun 8, 2012 12:56 PM

Pulled pansies from patio container and discarded them. Pansies don't survive in hot weather. Mixed up a solution and fed the rose bushes. Attempted to shovel prune moss phlox that is growing over the brick pavers onto sidewalk in garage bed but square blade shovel won't cut hot butter. Asked DH to sharpen it but I doubt if it will get done. Mr. Bower offered to sharpen shovels when he does his. I may take him up on it even if he charges me or take it up to White's hardware and have them sharpen it.

Dug up two dwarf fairy candytuft plants and some carpet of snow alyssum seedlings and transplanted them to bed in front of garage brick facade, sprinkled seeds I had gathered from my own plants last summer. Pulled up larkspurs that were planted there.

Anything I transplanted today got a drink of MG transplant solution. Will need to keep them watered till they settle in and take root.

Ran out of potting soil and mulch. Need to get more to fill in low spots in garage bed and for transplanting other things. Need to buy my annuals for bed in front of living room window. 87 degrees now, so I'm done for the day.

Asiatic Hybrid Lily "Red Dwarf"
Posted on Jun 7, 2012 5:17 PM

Dag blasted! I forgot to dig up and relocate the asiatic lily "Red Dwarf" a few months ago. It is planted in front of Dr. Ruppel clematis and today I saw a bloom on it. I thought it was one of the daylilies that I was gifted Sept. 2011 but didn't remember a garnet red one planted in that bed, then it dawned on me it was the Asiatic lily.  It only gets 18 in. tall so I can move it forward in the flowerbed. A beautiful gardnet red color. Hopefully I can find some more like it. If not chose another color but make sure I buy at least 4 of same color.

The Mary Todd daylilies that Johna and Ruby gifted me with in 2011 is almost blooming. Can't wait to see them. They are supposed to be yellow I believe.

Another storm and more rainfall
Posted on Jun 1, 2012 5:10 PM

It has been a delightful day, overcast and nice breeze until late afternoon when rain and storms started rolling in. Now they are forcasting possible tornados in some areas. I managed to do some flowerbed maintainence this morning, clipped back the oriental poppy stems, I had deadheaded yesterday and discarded the seed pods..I don't want or need anymore next Spring. Waiting for the foliage to die back, gathered some purple columbine seeds from one plant and I'm sure I missed some that had already reseeded probably. Did my first application of Miracle Gro by hose. Hope it had chance to soak into the ground before rain started. Clipped back the rest of the daf and tulip foliage, deadhead the rose bushes. Will be looking for dwarf larkspur seeds for next year. The ones I have now are such pretty colors..they are the Giant Imperial mix..from Burpee seeds.

Rain, Rain, go away, Pippi21 wants to come out and play!
Posted on May 30, 2012 4:29 AM

Wow! The storm came and dumped 1 1/2 in. of much needed rainfall for us last evening. It sure cooled things off, as temps went between 90-95 here yesterday. Depends on which one of my thermometer you looked at and whether in back yard or front yard..

The larkspurs and Alaska shastas are bent over and I almost tripped on one of the shastas going out to the driveway to pick up the morning newspaper. Hoping with the sunshine, they'll dry out and stand back up again.
