By gwhizz on Oct 6, 2013 4:41 PM, concerning plant: Asiatic lily (Lilium 'Lowana')

I had some serious concerns about what appeared to be a non-arrival of a 'Lowana' stem (in comparison with the growth of most of the other 'Harlequin' type hybrids, which mostly were already 6 inches tall). In readying the pot for emptying, I noted a stem travelling from one side to the other (roughly 9 inches across the pot) 6 inches under the soil. After I quickly re-covered the stem with fresh soil, 1 week later, it has now nosed through. Phew!!

Used extensively in breeding programs. Both seed and pollen fertile. Used 11 times each (pollen / seed parent).

An unusual color combination, the soft yellow petals with a halo at the base makes a glowing background for it's long, flaring salmon-pink trumpet; 16 to 20 inches, mid spring. Description complements of Brent and Becky's Bulbs.

By jmorth on Oct 6, 2013 10:01 AM, concerning plant: Cyclamineus Daffodil (Narcissus 'Little Witch')

RHS description at ‘The Royal Horticultural Society Horticultural Database’, available at www.rhs.org.uk:
Fl. yellow; perianth segments ovate, blunt or squarish at apex, with slight white mucro, reflexed, plane or with margins slightly incurved, separated; the inner segments more narrowly ovate, more nearly acute, sometimes twisted, with margins incurled; corona cylindrical, strongly ribbed, darker in tone than the perianth, with mouth straight and rim crenate. Dwarf. 2n=21'
Good forcer.

Cute name, very cute flower. From the wild N. cyclamineus, ‘Little Witch’ is a bright yellow pixie with a long, fluted, “stove-pipe” trumpet and petals that sweep back as if it were riding a tiny broomstick. It’ s vigorous, early-blooming, and a terrific perennializer. 6 Y-Y, 10-12”, zones 6-8aS/10WC

A dwarf multi-award winnerthat is both seed and pollen fertile w/ an impressive listing of descendants available at this DaffSeek site (10-6-13)
http://daffseek.org/query/Desc...
(19 times seed parent, 6 times pollen parent).
Characteristics of short stature and early blooming make this cultivar a prime candidate to force over winter. May be translocated to garden to bloom in successive years.

Exhibits 'Variation', ie- Daffodil color or division may vary as the bloom reaches full maturity. In this case, immature flowers sometimes measuring Division 2 (though classified as Division 1).
Fertile, believed both seed and pollen fertile though not known to be used in breeding yet.

By dave on Oct 6, 2013 7:20 AM, concerning plant: Pear (Pyrus 'Tennousi')

NCGR-Corvallis said:Tennousi - Hybrid cultivar, low chill, fire blight resistant. Open pollinated seedling of Tennessee possibly pollinated by Hosui. Developed by Harris County, Texas extension agent Bill Adams, who collected seed of Tennessee about 1992. The only pear flowering nearby at the time was Hosui. Tennousi may be immune to fire blight. In 20 years it has never become infected in Natelson's orchard in Houston. Fruit large, uniform, round like Hosui, but with European pear texture and flavor; Ripens well on the tree; Does not oxidize when cut. One of the best pears for the Houston area. May be self fertile. Tree requires 550-600 chill hours.

This cultivar is being sold alongside Asian Pear (Pyrus pyrifolia 'Hosui') in garden centers around Houston and I was pleased to be able to get one.

By jmorth on Oct 5, 2013 11:30 PM, concerning plant: Long-cupped Narcissus (Narcissus 'Graduation')

A second entry for same name is recorded in the RHS registry at www.rhs.org.uk. 2nd entry is coded W - GPP. This second one could be a syn. of `Graduate'.

(Aforementioned 1st entry is coded W - WWP).
The Mitsch first entry is both seed and pollen fertile (3 times as seed, 5 times as parent. A list of offspring can be found at DaffSeek (10-6-13) at http://daffseek.org/query/Desc...

Should be forcible.

RHS has 2 entries for the cultivar Flamingo. The other one is also a Division 2 daffodil. The petals in the 1st entry are white w/ pink cup. The 2nd entry has Yellow petals and a Red cup and is considerably older in age of registry/first flowering, ie- pre 1907. Breeder was G.H. Engleheart from England.
