A cross of one of the first martagons I grew from seed (pink) and Brotsing. The second season flowering, I had hoped the irregular shape of the flowers would be more uniform this year, but not so. A most interesting color of copper-pewter, though.

My first seedling cross ever fully opened up today.

Of the entire seed lot I planted, this one is probably the least impressive. But, it is a hardy one. Third year blooming. The other blooms from this cross should be opening soon. For anyone that wants to keep track, it's number is 16-001. 'Orange Sensation' x 'Matrix'. Thankfully, it's taller than 'Matrix' Rolling on the floor laughing This cross has resulted in a lot of variation in the seedlings, from this tango, to a red and yellow brushmark type.

Always my favorite thread, the seedling one. And I will say you have both started this out with some good energy.

Rick, I would think that the maturation of a martagon, it may take several years, to show it's true form. And your patience to grow these out, well that in and of itself is an accomplishment. I can't think that I have seen an "ugly" martagon ever. What you have there are keepers.

David, those first seedlings will always have a special place in your heart. And as you say, the variety of seedlings you grew out from that cross was nice too.

I hope your right about that martagon, Tracey. I don't doubt that there are some already out there with that color, but it is very different.

Dave when you start with good genetics, you're bound to get good results. And when the parents have such a wide background, it's so fun to see all that pops up.

Another seedling from the 16-001 seed lot. It reminds me a lot of 'Tribal Dance'

That's a nice one, Tracey. May I ask the parentage?

I call it 'Fellner's Joy' as it is a white Fellner asiatic x Elegant Joy, garden named and it has just sort of stuck here.

more seedlings from the same cross. The first picture is a new bloom this year from it. But it caught my attention. I don't think the picture captures how bright the colors are on this one.
Thumb of 2020-06-20/Nhra_20/d05a8e

I think these last few blooming are the best of this cross in my opinion.

I told myself I would cut back on crosses this year. I told myself I would only collect a small number of different pollens. Instead I find myself tearing off another chunk of thread-through cross labels. Then I am going through my inventory of frozen pollens to see if I might be able to cook up something really cool this year.

And forget about eating at the kitchen table. Once again it is covered with culture dishes of collected pollens, each waiting the four days to get packaged in a little folded foil packet and tucked into the freezer. At the end of the season they will all be tucked into one packet labeled "Collected pollens 2020".
Whew!

Oh, I forgot all that seed cleaning prior to the seeds going into the freezer...

Eating at the table is way over rated anyways. Lol. Hopefully you won't need to add another freezer...

Won't need another freezer because if push comes to shove my covid-19 frozen food supply will have to go to make room for more seeds and pollens. Hilarious!
