I would love your opinions on this older seedling, which I garden named "Poop Eye." I personally don't like brown daylilies but have been encouraged by others to hang on to this one. It has a gold base with a bronze/copper overlay and a dark brown eye. Early last year I decided to compost it. So growing atop the compost pile with roots exposed, it put up a scape with 22 buds and 4-way branching. Then it proceeded to rebloom with a scape that had nine buds. It grew up in a garden bed between Dixie Boy and Mystic Mariner. A three-year-old, It will set pods with tet pollen, so I believe it came from a seed that dropped from my pod of Dixie Boy X Samuel Bell. This year it didn't bloom until the heat wave, had only 8 buds, and the blooms were so faded the flower was not recognizable. Most all my bud counts were very low this year, except for the beds I hand watered.

I would be delighted to have that one. nodding It has my tied-for-favorite color combination.

Thanks Dot and Margaret!

Shannon, Debra and Cindy - I appreciate your thoughts about my copper brown baby. It does have nice veining both in the throat and on the petals. The throat goes from yellow to green.

I usually compost my brown seedlings too, but that one
wants to LIVE. Could all that hardiness be incorporated
by using it as a bridge plant?

Shirlee - That brown one DID want to live against all odds. I'm not sure what I would cross it with, or where to go with it since brown was never one of my goals. I guess I could cross it with my stippled bronze seedling to see where that would take me. Any suggestions for HOW to use it as a bridge plant. Initially I wasn't sure whether it had come out of Mystic Mariner (a dip) or Dixie Boy ( a tet). So I pollinated it just to find out which ploidy it was. I didn't even keep the seeds. Do you have any suggestions for how I might use it in hybridizing?

Hmmm, I'm thinking, Debra. My first thought would be
to try a yellow. Something like JT Davis or Spectral Elegance.
Or maybe a melon. The dark eye is more than likely going
to show up, but perhaps lighten it a bit with yellow. The dark edge too.
Depends on what you aim for. Would you want to darken the eye
and edge, and cover up the brown with perhaps an almost black
eye and edge?

I have a seedling that is in the tawny category that I am thinking of
pairing with yellow. I don't care for its brownish color, but I like its shape, and
it is hardy. I definitely want hardiness, even if I have to take some newer
ones backwards a bit, before going forward again.

I'm going to look back at all your photos and think some more.
This kind of thing is usually a toss up with experimenting.

I just noticed you mentioned Samuel Bell in one of your posts. That might be an interesting combo.

Shirlee - Thanks for your ideas! Maybe I'll cross it with Crazy Ivan or Meet Joe Black next year. I lost Samuel Bell in our last drought.

Hi Debra, I apologize for not welcoming you to ATP and commenting on your alway beautiful photographs. It has been such a bad year for daylilies in our area that I just about lost interest. We had the warm weather and big flush of green growth followed by freezing temps. When my daylilies put up scapes they were, for the most part, much shorter than normal and with much lower bud counts. They got watered regularly so I don't think water was the issue. I pollinated and set a lot of pods, but many aborted and the ones that have stayed on until the pods crack open often have one or two viable seeds and often none. The rest are very soft. I wonder if these first scapes just didn't have the energy to mature the seeds after what they went through in the spring. The rebloom scapes were normal height but by that time it was too hot to pollinate.

I have a seedling that I will gladly give you to cross with "Poop Eye". It is a cross of Cool Confections X Southern Dazzle and is a large bloom. Last year I measured some blooms at 8" but they were not that big this year. It is BROWN and I don't care for brown daylilies. I am either going to give it to someone who wants it or compost it (if it will die). The ones you want to die in the compost pile usually won't die and the ones you want desperately to live sometimes die. This photo doesn't look as brown as it really is. Believe me, it is BROWN!

Ann - It's so good to see you posting here. We've missed you and Dot on Garden Web. It has been a hard year for daylilies. Many of my previous best performers had the short scapes and low bud counts this year. But lots of my dormants were unaffected and put on a good show. The 10 days of triple digit temps ruined most of my hybridizing efforts. I'll pass on your brown seedling, which doesn't look very brown in the photo. If I use my brown baby, it will probably be to try to get away from brown.
