This year we removed Manzanita trees in our front yard, and I finally got to plant my iris in an ideal location (in the ground versus pots). For the next couple of years I want to see the garden enjoyed in normal fashion, but I dreamed about eventually sending out a notice to my surrounding neighbors to come and choose a bunch of your favorite iris to take home as cut flowers. I'm torn, because on one hand everyone gets to see the flowers when they walk or drive by,, and on the other hand I think neighbors would be even more appreciative to have some to take home. What's the peanut gallery think? (2025 perhaps). Or I could even ask folks that take flowers to make an in kind donation to our local wildlife rescue org. Shrug!

It is nice to offer blooms to your neighbors, but on the other hand bearded iris blooms don't last long when cut. I leave mine on stem because they last longer uncut. So will they appreciate the short lived blooms more? Another idea would be to pot up increases and offer them to neighbors for a small charity donation. If they express interest in specific iris you can tell them that you will save them an increase and the cost is X charity amount.

I also prefer seeing the blooms connected to the plants.. I have a hard time even cutting stalks for our show (my competitive side wins out on this one).. but I think it's a lovely gesture..

Yes, I agree with Leslie on this one. They can all enjoy the blooms longer and you will probably be wanting to share increases by that time. And, if one likes an iris that is not ready to divide, then they could have some when they are ready.

The only time I bring an iris into the house is if some critter or I accidentally breaks a stalk. Shrug!

Not only do the blooms not last as long when cut, some of the new buds that open inside in a vase, don't have the luster, or good shape of those that bloom while getting nourished by the plant. I used to just give rhizomes to visitors who wanted my extras, then found out that many of them never got planted. I found that they had to invest something in them to give them motivation to plant them, so now I have often had a sale where I sell the extras for a small fee. I also give many extras to the local iris club to sell at their sale.

I am like Barbara, only broken stems make it inside. Or those rebloomers that decide to bloom when it is freezing out.

I totally agree with Tom's statement about a fee motivating them to plant the rhizomes.

I have given spare iris rhizomes to people that admire my garden. One lady gave me a lovely salvia to say thankyou.

Robin, there have been troubling reports on the news about fires in Australia, and I'm hoping they are not near you or other forum members there. Are you o.k?

Richard, I like the idea of potting up extra increases for giving or for insurance.
I cn always tell which are favorites. I have their progeny in pots!

So far Victoria's fire season has been slow to start. NSW, on the other hand, is going up in smoke and I've heard reports of fires over in WA as well.

Thankyou for your concern Jan and Evelyn. I live nowhere near the fires and I am fine. There is a planned power outage in my street today for maintenance and my power is on at the moment so I thought I'd quickly pop in.

Joshua,

Sorry to hear about the fires in NSW. They sound just as bad as what we've had here in California. I hope all of our Australian friends stay safe!

NSW (New South Wales) recently declared a state of emergency. This past week or so has been one of the worst for NSW in years.

To make matters worse, the Australian and US bushfire seasons (particularly in California) are starting to overlap, so it's harder to share resources between our countries.

What is really grim about the fires in Australia is that it is not yet even summer there!
The fires in California this year only got bad in our very late summer and early fall.

I agree, praying that they get these fires out ASAP.

I do remember when Australia helped with the fires here, and when the US sent resources over there. I really want to thank you again. I tip my hat to you. I tip my hat to you. I tip my hat to you.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I agree with all the comments. Have provided rhizomes to neighbors, and one hasn't said a word after I dropped off rhizomes a year and a half ago, so I think you are right Tom; people need motivation sometimes or the free rhizomes might just wind up in the compost bin. Learned another embarrassing lesson after I gave rhizomes to the receptionist at the doctor's office. When I returned three months later, the receptionist said she was planning on planting the rhizomes soon, she kept them in a cool, dark, dry spot. I think I turned flush as I hadn't made it clear that they should have been planted ASAP. And some of the rhizomes I had given her were as good as the hybridizers from Oregon. But alas, I have extra potted rhizomes that I will take to her in January. And Barbara, thanks about the pic of Madteo. He passed away Thanksgiving morning two years ago. I had one of my PCI seedlings survive this year, and if it grows up and produces nice blooms I plan on registering it with a name such as Madteo's Memory as a memorial to our first Tibetan Terrier. His color was blue, and the PCI seedling should have a nice blue signal with blue lines extending in the falls. I feel lucky that this seedling survived as I had a major die off of PCI's this summer. Thank You!
