I think they can get to around 36 cm, and can live up to about 75 years. or longer possibly.

I think that is the normal limit. I expect you might get yours to grow a bit larger with proper care.

Yes. The largest Hip. bulb I've held in my hands and grown to flower was this one, at 39.75 cm. I purchased locally, and to quote myself when it started blooming: "Oh My...What a show!" Very pricey, and FWIW, I regularly check the bulb size (circumference, in centimeters) when I purchase and compare it the 'promised' size stated by the retailers before planting.
Online retailers / local shops are starting to sell 'jumbo' or 'XL' bulbs for a premium. So yes, they do grow bigger. Would they grow that big in your own care? Is it only special cultivars now being bred for these bigger bulbs? Would any regular bulb get that big under prime conditions? Time will tell, but the huge bulbs I have are H. 'Red Lion' and 'Black Pearl' ('red pearl?') two common cultivars. Royal Colors offered in 2019 a "Super XXL Jumbo H. 'Akiko' " bulb of 46 cm + which they claim is "The Largest Amaryllis Bulb on Royal Colors" . I've never ordered from them, so I can't say anything about it other than the size claim.

Welcome @kenisaac!

I'm fond of quoting myself and like it when others say something like, 'to quote myself'.
But anyway, I would also have said something like 'that's a dang big bulb!' However, I don't think I would have thought to measure one. I also don't recall seeing any that have a promised or even predicted size. But I'm new to growing Amaryllis and when I pick one up and see the price, I usually but it right back down. Never ordered one online but one nice member here sent me a little bulblet a few years ago. Despite abuse by me, it's still alive and growing!

So thanks for showing us that really big booger of a bulb. And to quote myself, 'Welcome!'

I also measure just to get a sense of how big they are vs advertising. Figure if I'm going to have them long term (going on 16 years) I should get what's advertised, bigger is better.

Very interesting article. Bulb size is a result of the cultivar; miniature and cybister ones are never going to make huge bulbs. Some cultivars don't increase much in diameter over the years, instead they produce lots of bulblets. Supreme Garden is a great example of this, the mother bulb, which doesn't get much bigger, produces a clump in a few years. But in general, you expect that age will also result in bigger bulbs, if there is adequate water, sun and nutrients during the growing season. The "jumbo" bulbs, some are retired mother bulbs and some have been left in the ground for an extra year or two, are much more expensive due to production costs. You expect them to produce 3 or more scapes.

Hi Barbara...tx_flower_child...crawgarden...cwhitt..kenisaac....sangel... sending new year blessings your way .
Bulb size on all the amaryllis this year are all medium. Some have bloomed with two or more stocks.
Many of the amaryllis bulbs started in oct are still bloomin new pic ...hung a few waxed blooms upside down will be the second bloom ...others ready to bloom in a week or so . Crazy creative advertisers are at it again....with the waxed bulbs with faces some look like snow balls while others covered in glitter and then the hanging inside down on Xmas trees ...

bsharf...will post when the wax when opens on the hanging bulbs. This will be the second bloom for the waxed.hep.

The cybister bulb is the green bloom the smallest bulb and this flower has been in bloom since November. Longest bloom I have ever experience. The hybrid flowers are unusual and hope to see more on the market in the years to come.

kenisaac....the jumbo bulbs you were posting about are $27.00 ea. I would like to try a couple I can't imagine the flowers any bigger than the large sized and are huge in the red pic above is about 10".Maybe I'll put the jumbo size on Santa's list next year.

If amaryllis bulbs are googles all the waxed bulbs with many different designs are shown

Cybister blooms since nov.

Here is no mater when you buy bulbs (actually you can buy them only before the winter) or plant them, bloom will be only in the end of winter (March-April), if will bloom at all.

Thxs, bumplbea, interesting article- bulb size as relating to flower...and as bsharf said, cultivars are different for bulb size and flower count (as you can research online, see screenshot below.)
Also found it interesting that online some retailers will "guarantee" number of stalks / flowers based on bulb size.
I found this site lists charts for each Hadeco bulb variety based on bulb size so florists could judge average stalk / flower count based on bulb size.
(The system won't let me post link, but see screenshot below for bloom count chart specifically for variety H. 'Merry Christmas'- top of screenshot gives most of URL so you can compare varieties)
Thumb of 2020-01-08/kenisaac/9a51d6

***** UPDATE: According to my chart checking -so you don't have to, and under greenhouse conditions:
The Hadeco variety with the most flowers is H. 'christmas star' at 25 flowers with three spikes (average) on a 28/30 cm bulb, but you sacrifice flower size for that many flowers, with average size of flower in that variety is 12cm (4.7 in.) To stay with a larger flowering variety, Hadeco's H. 'safari' at 17.4 flowers with 2.8 spikes (average) on a 32/34 cm bulb, must be showy with average size of flower at 16cm (6.2 in.)
Of course, your table-top / garden may produce differently from a greenhouse!
