Thread OP

I moved to a new apartment thats on the dark side. Never does the sun ever shine through any of my windows, closet thing I got is my patio doors. The sun light is roughly 15-20 feet away from my patio doors.

Will this be enough light for pothos? Spider plants? Snake plants? And ZZ plants? Perhaps Monstera?

Will I need a grow light? If so, can I just use it a couple hours a day since the plants are near a low light window? Is this considered low light?

Thanks so much, I am new to this!

Again, even tho it looks like a lot of light. Direct sun light is like 20 feet away and never gets closer than that.

Yes I would call it low light conditions. I have pothos, Peace Lilies and Snake plants in low light and they do fine at around 10 ft from the windows . No direct light but I have good light coming in those windows.

I would ask in the houseplant forum, I think someone there could answer your question. https://garden.org/forums/view...

Those plants should work but if there is any way you could add a floor lamp close to the shelf I'd leave it on a few hours a day especially on cloudy days as supplemental light. It wouldn't have to be anything fancy but a 100 watt bulb would be plenty of light. I hope this suggestion helps your decision. Thumbs up Trudy

it's low light. You know You're growing things in what amounts to 100% full shade. You clearly get it.. more would be better, and this is gonna be tough on your plants. You made smart choices in plants for this location, but you seem to understand they are going to grow slow and leggy. Really the only thing you can do is wait and see and decide how you feel about it.

The good news is there are tons of options for artificial lighting. You don't need expensive or ugly/industrial grow lights. Slimline LEDs could be relatively cheap to run And unobtrusive on the underside of shelves. Just make sure you're using a spectrum that will work for plants. If you're buying "off the rack", Look for 6500k bulbs.

Here's a 24w cfl just screwed into a living room light that's plenty for my aloe.. I ran out of window space, so it was this or freeze outside and it's working well. Ideally, if I were a grower I'd leave it on 16 hours a day. I do not do that. I'm not on a schedule, Honestly I have no idea how long I leave it on or when. Its pretty haphazard, any additional light is better than none.

Have you though about what you're hoping to achieve? I don't think you'd be happy with anything on that shelf as a permanent year round solution, do you? Is it temporary?

I can tell by the way you posed the question, you're pretty sure of the answer..

I love having lush green plants in my house, and after years I've potted a lot of cuttings, so I try to rotate them. (I also don't have a lot if light). Around the house in winter and the outdoors in Summer. That's somewhat successful, but as they get bigger you do run out of room.
