I have an area that I plan to put some larger daylilies in rows. There will be 24 inches between the rows and the plants will be spaced 18 inches apart. I have 3 rows of 17 plants for a total of 51. Some of the plants are Wispy Rays, Heavenly United We Stand, Galaxy Explosion, Dark Star ect, -rather tall, large plants. Will the 18 inch spacing be too crowded? I do plan on dividing them before the clumps get too out of hand. I have found that if I let them go too long, I am physically unable to manhandle them Sad A mistake I don't want to make again, too much work for me!

IMHO, with large flowers, at least a 2' center would be better.

I also think 24 inch centers for large plants would be better, but if you plan to divide them regularly to keep them from becoming large clumps it might be a good idea to limit the space that will have.

Yes I don't want a lot of space between them because I am hoping to crowd out the weeds and bare areas dry out too quickly. I don't mulch my daylilies.

My 4 year old clump of Galaxy Explosion is over 3 foot wide. I'm doing several "Mama's and Papa's" beds to free up seedling space in the established garden. My plan is to space the big ones 30 inches apart. Clumps of "Graphic Heart", "Wild Chicken", "Freaky People", "Little Jasper Spider", etc all need at least that much space here. I do not plan on digging or dividing unless I must, those big clumps just wear me out!

Rocket City also makes large clumps. The one I have in MI is at least 2 ft wide; have to divide this summer-getting it out of the ground will be a challenge.
Life is better at the lake.

I agree also that 24" would be best. Also, off set the spacing of your center row.

I like that Sue, and I did decide last night to use the 2 ft spacing, there will be 3 ft between rows, 2 ft between plants.

Thanks guys for your thoughts. Smiling
