Thread OP

I planted about 50 daylilies for the first time this spring. One of them looks completely different from all the others now. I have a picture and would like to know if there is something wrong with this plant, or if it is normal. Many thanks!

That looks like some kind of grass and not a daylily. It may be that the daylily is still there, but the grass has overwhelmed it.

Nutgrass or BurrGrass. Either way you need to get rid of it IMO.

Yes, yes, yes...get rid of it and don't put it into a compost pile or anywhere near anything you grow. It's nasty stuff and spreads. Kinda pretty, but trust me, you don't want it around.

Did you make labels for each of the daylilies that you planted in the Spring? I don't see any and perhaps that's not important to you, but if you are here you probably care enough about your daylilies that you may sooner rather than later regret not identifying the exact location of each one. Even if you have a chart or some other form of identification you might want to label them now. I started out modestly last year but soon got out of control and reordered multiple times so if you decide to get labels think big and order 4x as many as you need now! I found the PawPaw Everlast Label Co. has good prices and great customer service. www.everlastlabel.com. If you don't have one get a label printer, which can be purchaased for not a lot of $$. Costco has the Brother P-Touch 2040C for $27.99 and it includes 2 full size tape cartridges (2 different widths) and 6 AA batteries. You don't need to purchase a separate AC power adaptor - the batteries will last a really long time.

Many thanks for all your help! I'm digging it up today and letting Smokey's Gardens know what they sent me.

When you dig it up, check for any daylily roots or bit of foliage. You may have planted a daylily there and the aggressive grass took over later.

I also suggest that you make a map. Labels sometimes get lost . Welcome to the forum. Show us some pictures next year when they bloom.

Welcome, Maysemaze! Yes that is nutsedge in bloom and it is a nasty, nasty weed. I have found that it is lighter in color than daylilies, so I can dig it out before it goes to seed now... usually! I did find one that was seeding and couldn't get my shovel fast enough, lol!

As others suggested, it is good to label the daylilies with the name and to make a map. I do hope that you will post photos of your daylilies next year. We would love to see them!

When they start blooming you can take photos, Mayesmaze, then you can use the daylily database to look up and compare with the ones on your order list. Then you can make tags for each one (and I agree
with Nancy's Everlast suggestion for tags ) and you'll know what you've got. Names are important so in a discussion you can i.d. them. This forum is very useful. After you have your list, you can go to your plant list in your profile and add the names of the ones you have purchased. Maps are also good, once you've i.d'd. Welcome!

I forgot to say, I'm new here and know more about irises than daylilies. But info about tags works for both. Smiling

That's nutsedge - a nasty piece of work. Bag it for the trash but dig down all around where it is and look for little bits of white roots and runners and eliminate them all.

I agree @daylily99 I was just going to say that. I live on an acreage and Yellow nutsedge grows like a weed where I live and I also commonly mistake it as a daylily. Some parts of the nutsedge plant is also edible (I believe it's their roots).
Not only people give others signs, but plants do too.

I well remember when I first got into daylilies. I bought a daylily from Lowe's and watched it multiply at an extremely rapid rate, thought I had a real winner. Of course it was what we call nut grass (not really a grass) nut sedge is the proper name.
Also don't over look the other weed in the photo, I think that is some type of wood sorrel, and it will take over large areas and spread everywhere if it is not controlled (at least here in my yard and garden: zone 8B).

Hate that weed. Speaking of labels and maps somehow these two daylilies of mine are a mystery to me. Both are large 5—6 inches across. Anyone recognize them ? Thanks!!

Mayesmayes, Why are you going to blame the nursery who sent or sold them to you (let alone, give them a bad name on here by listing their name in this forum)? NUTSEDGE is such a common (and aggressive) weed grass, and it can grow and spread like wildfire. Depending on variety, it is usually a lighter color--almost always with a lime green triangular leaf--with a dark center ridge. You must google it to find out how to eradicate it, most often with a herbicide, because it is so aggressive. If you pull it out, the "nuts" and underground rhizome's spread even more. And while pulling a few out early, once it has gone to flower is has already produced a vast amount of them that can take over gardens and grass. Digging them out or constantly pulling them while they are young may work, but you must pay a lot of attention to make it work. And do not compost or throw them anywhere else but in the garbage. They spread like crazy.

Hello from Permastake garden marker
Hello. Can't help but empathize about receiving tag-a-long plants. For 5 years I have tried to prune a Spirea away from an
Elderberry (Sambucus) bush. It is part of the nature of the gardening world and the survival of plants. A fascinating topic. Marking plants is certainly part of one solution.

good luck in the future
I welcome any information
