Getting back to scented pelargoniums this season as I have obtained some plants locally.

Prince of Orange (orange scent)
Grey Lady Plymouth (rose scent)
Pink Champagne (lime scent)

I have grown the dark leaf kind of pelargonium from seeds under lights.

I also just found them.
Ordered their collections as they are different from those I have.
They seem focussed on the species rather than modern cultivars.
We shall see how the seeds germinate.

And have you seen this place? I got some odd species Geraniums and Pelargoniums from them, including some succulents and woody varieties and summer-dormant varieties.

Thanks for all the help over the years!
I now have a few plants and seeds for scented pelargoniums.
The seeds are not dust like--they should have an awn attached.
That tail screws down into the soil when it gets wet, and takes the seed down into the soil.
I'll take pictures later.

I have always had to remove the seeds from the pod to get them to germinate. The ones I left with the tail attached never sprouted. This isn't a very good photo, but it's the only one that came out at all:

Maybe it contains germination inhibitors, like tomato goop???

Oh dear--I left the awn on the seeds!
We shall just wait and see if there is any germination.

It is strongly suggested by some that the awn and casing be removed and the seed scarified. Others say it will just take longer for germination if you leave it on. Others suggest leaving it. Some suggest temperature swings between day time and night time temperatures.

As memory serves, the seeds I've purchased all had the casing removed. I lightly scarified mine, too. I had really good results with that method.

Good to know!
I quit trying to scarify bedding plant geranium seeds,--- because they seemed to shatter then.
For the next scented seeds, I will try again.
These I just did with the casing and tail on.
And I will just wait and see.
If just one germinates----then can do cuttings.

In a month I have had good germination with the husk and tail left on.
I have had them such that they were cool at night, and then very warm in the day. And under lights during the day.

Winter Sowing
Great!
It is interesting that in "real life" we often find that things work out fine if we don't do things the "recommended" way. I did a little experiment several years ago with seeds from my Iris foetidissima 'lutea'. These are supposed to have the berry removed, then scarified. I tried it with all combinations of these treatments and without any treatment, some planted indoors, some "Winter Sown" outside. This species is one which requires a complicated conditioning. They germinated late the second winter. The best germination was from (drum roll...) The untreated whole berries I planted in a pot under a cedar tree, and forgot about.
