Hi everyone! Just noticed some bareroots (fancy bodybags, maybe. $12.95)) that have come in at Home Depot. I'm always on the outlook for orangey roses that will dry to a nice red, although I had thought I would sit out this winter of getting any roses plants except my daughter just moved, becoming a homeowner for the frst time, and wants my help to plant a bunch of roses in her new front yard which has a large Dutch Elm tree (shallow roots?), southern exposure, otherwise. Just wondering if anyone can comment on these offerings as to anything pro and con, and especially thorniness since I am so tired of thorny roses. They are: Mardi Gras, Cl. Pinata, Anisley Dickson, and Charisma. I already looked up Marina, and it said it's thorny, but otherwise looked like it might be a good candidate. Thank you for your experience if you have had any with these roses! Thank You!

Love Mardi Gras! So bright and colorful. I don't remember it as being particularly thorny. Just average.

Charisma isn't bad at all. It has thorns but they are well spaced out.

It's a rose!!! It has nothing to do with life and death.

Well, I went ahead and did it--bought one or two of each except for Mardi Gras, but might go back and get it, too. The thorns looked kind of scary. The only problem I have with these "body bag" roses, there is too often signs of canker, here and there, but hopefully, it won't end up being a killer like it was for me two years ago. Definitely will be sterilizing my pruners in between plants! Maybe I should give them a clorox soak, too.

Rosemary, the only one I grow of those is Marina. I just went out and looked at mine, and the large thorns on the larger canes are pretty much normal in size and spacing, but it does have TONS of smaller prickles covering pretty much every millimeter on the larger canes. I think you scored big on getting that one at Home Depot (unless I'm misreading and that wasn't one of the HD ones). I'm very fond of Marina!

Thank you for your observances, Susan of Marina. I did get one at HD. It looks like the perfect orange to dry to a red. The thorn/prickle aspect sounds like my Fragrant Memory which has a lovely fragrance, but is one thorny/prickly bush! Maybe that's why I read that this year it's not being offered anywhere for sale in the U.S.. I checked at another HD, and they also had Fragrant Cloud (which is a favorite and I have as a tree rose), and Rio Samba, (along with climbers America and Westerland) , but I was put off by possible signs of canker/disease.

Oh that's great that you got Marina from HD! I got mine from Roses Unlimited in 2013, and according to my 2020 print catalog from them, they still have it listed, but no one else in the US (according to HMF), so you scored big. I was originally turned onto it by a friend who knows I love oranges. Sometimes it's a bit more red-orange than I'd prefer, veering a bit into Fragrant Cloud territory, but it's a darned great dark orange, and sometimes just spectacularly orange!
