Some of the tips of my roses are turning brown (see photo). I have not pruned these roses since August. We. have had strong winds. I wonder if one or more of the following could be the cause:
1. The leaves are old and this is to be expected. None of my newer roses have this problem.
2. They are suffering from leaf burn caused by the strong winds.
3. They are not getting enough water.

Can you tell me what's going on?
Thanks

Are they toward the bottom and inside? If so then yes, probably older leaves dying off, However, wind burn and desiccation is also a possibility. In windy situations extra watering may be necessary because it causes faster evaporation of water.

Please forgive my amateur commentary but from I have witnessed though the gardening hobby is that plants cannibalize leaves. This is what it appears to be to me. The discoloration is working from the outside of the leaf inwards. Again, I AM JUST GUESSING from what I have seen in the past.

Stan, I guess you could call it that. What is really happening is that the leaves that start to die off are the ones the plant feels are no longer earning their keep by producing good photosynthesis to feed the plant. If the leaf is not contributing then the plant stops sending it food and water and lets it die off and shed so it can produce younger, healthier leaves that will feed the plant more efficiently. That is why they are more often at the bottom or interior of the plant. Those are places more likely to be shaded by the rest of the plant so they can no longer do effective photosynthesis.

Thanks for your responses. I think I'm not watering enough, especially in windy conditions. Since all of my roses are in large containers rather than in the ground, they probably dry out quicker.
