Can anyone tell me about this rose cultivar? It doesn't appear in my ARS handbook. The coloring reminds me of First Prize.

Promise, a Warriner hybrid tea, was an extremely popular Jackson & Perkins offering for at least 15 years from the late 1970s through the 1980s. I have one that's about 35 years old. It's fairly tall for a hybrid tea (5-6 feet) and is still quite healthy and vigorous.

Thank you very much, Zuzu. I went ahead and bought it--only $5.99, along with several others at the the local grocery. I sat down and went through several of my rose books looking for it, and found a mention in only two of them from that period of time. They both made a play on the word "Promise", like there are better roses out there, and one said it benefits from shade in the afternoon as otherwise the bloom will fade and be washed-out. It must be sturdy, though, to last for 35 yrs. in your garden!

It's a pretty rose. I have one I bought, and also have a huge plant of it here at our new property. The one here on the property is likely as old as Zuzu's. The poor thing is plagued with suckers and a tree growing in the middle of it, which I need to get my husband to get it out for me. The blooms on it last yr were a minimum of 5" in diameter, but actually more like 6".

This is my plant
