This was sold to me as a Painted Lady. The two leaves when I got it looked just like pictures I see online. Although they do start more yellow and turn green, the pictures I've seen usually have uniform brushstroke variegation. Sometimes I see ones with solid green areas, but I haven't seen others like this with large areas of yellow/orange. I would think a deficiency if it wasn't for the clean lines and the stem also showing the same variegation as the corresponding leaf. One almost all yellow leaf has a tiny section of normal looking variegation at the top corner (it is only a little wavy because it's newly unfurled) and one is almost a half moon. I think it's a painted lady with extra aurea type variegation but someone suggested Strawberry Shake. Strawberry Shake doesn't look quite right to me. Any ideas or advice welcome! If my thoughts are wrong please be kind! I'm not claiming to know anything, just brainstorming and giving as much info as possible. No matter what it is she's pretty and I love her. I'm just so curious. Thank you!

Hmmmm. Well, I have been growing Painted Lady for close to 20 years and yours does not look like mine. And I agree, it also does not look like Strawberry Shake. It could be a Painted Lady that is exhibiting sectional variegation, which I guess would make it a variegated Painted Lady, or it could be a Thai Sunrise that is just very very yellow and lacking in a lot of dark green.

But, Painted Lady is a very rampant CLIMBER and produced tons of adventitious roots....your plant almost looks like a self header, but its still small and hard to tell

Thank you for the reply. I see what you mean about Thai Sunset, but the green seems to be solid on those. The green parts on this and the one totally green leaf seem to have the classic Painted Lady patterning. It is so strange though! Thank you for your feedback as someone who is very experienced with Painted Ladies. Have you ever seen a Painted Lady with sectional variegation before? Occums razor would dictate I have something mislabeled and not a random very rare plant, but I've asked some other groups and so far I've hit dead ends. I agree that it does look a bit like a self header but it is still pretty small. As far as the adventitious roots, I should mention that I live in the mountains of Southern Oregon. It is VERY dry here and I only have wood heat so my house is extra dry (even with humidifiers). Many of my bigger plants that should have a lot only have a couple. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with Painted Lady. Based on your experience I'll keep looking for other leads if you've never seen this before.

No, I haven;t not really, but then the only one I have ever really looked at very closely in my own, which is a very old plant, I have cut it back many times and traded and sold cuttings. These are a few photos I dug up because I'm too lazy to go out and take one (and its almost dark here ha ha) It does put out some all green leaves at times. But mine has always been very highly patterned and tending toward very light coloration. Most of my plants are 'heirlooms', they were purchased or traded for many years ago when they first came onto the market.

I have to be honest with you, your plant looks to me to be more like an mutated Philodendron Golden erubescens than a Painted Lady. Look at a few photos of that one....I know yours in juvenile, but the leaf form looks more like an erubescens.

Golden erubescens DOES sometimes exhibit sectional variegation, I have one and it does...I have never had mine make and streaked leaves, but it has made sectional leaves before

Yours is so pretty! It is a bit on the lighter side. It must get really good light! I can sort of see that with the golden. It's got the yellow/gold colors. Not quite the brush strokes like I"m seeing on the green here but it is definitely close! I'm confident that it is some sort of erubescens or hybrid of one.
