Hello,
I just bought two Adenium pots from Lowe's and they are very healthy, but the 8-inch pots seem too small for both plants and the soil is so soaking wet, I'm thinking of repotting both plants into larger pots, probably 12" with a different more porous mixture for better drainage.

What do you think?

Thank you.

Ron in Tucson Arizona, where the weather is always warm, or too hot.

Welcome! to the Adeniums forum:

Knowing Lowe's.... your plants may have *just* gotten watered the day you bought them

I would wait until spring for repotting ....

keep them indoors, until night time lows are a sustained 50° or above

A quick check of forecast temperatures in the Tucson area ... the low temps for the next 7 days are predicted @ 39° to upper 40's and a few in the lower 50's .... wait a while to move plants outside

adenium do really well in unglazed azalea pots .....unglazed pots help disperse water faster through the sides

for now ...cut back on water to once every 14 days or so .....and don't fertilize

Here is a tried and true potting mix for adeniums -

Mix together:

2 Part: Coconut Coir -
1 Part: Poultry Grit (chicken grit) /or Pea Gravel - (sift out any fine grain silt)
1 Part: Sand - coarse Builder's Sand, or Leveling Sand, or Horticultural Sand - (sift out any fine grain silt)
1 Part: Lump Charcoal - Break-up (crush larger pieces) - (sift out any fine grain silt)
1 Part: Lava-rock – (volcanic cinders or pumice) (crush larger pieces) - (sift out any fine grain silt)

Optional: mix with above

1 Part: Redwood Bark / Orchid (Phalaenopsis) Mix - Break-up, cut or crush larger stems & bark
1 Part: Perlite - coarse

In a Adenium re-potting mix pinch ?

Can safely substitute a half and half mixture of Orchid / Phalaenopsis Soil Mix (mostly bark and rocks)
mixed with Cactus / Palm Mix
(both available in bags at most Big Box Building Stores)

Once re-potted raise the pot in such a way that any water added to the pot flows freely away ...

Thank you, thank you, James!

I have a greenhouse on the porch and my Adeniums are there for the winter at a constant 70F at night.

Today (Sunday, March 14, 2021) for example, the temp is 83F outside, as I type this at 12:28 PM, and I pulled the plants to the sun from the greenhouse.

Thank you again for the validation regarding repotting now (because of the soaked soil) or not. I truly appreciate it. Also, many thanks for the suggestion about the pots. All great info and I will definitely use your guidelines, as your images prove the suggestions.

Thumbs up

Not a problem .... and good luck with your adenium

might add ...
summer = growing season
winter = dormant season

in the summer months treat adenium like a tropical plant ....water thoroughly to saturation once 3 to 7 days
in the winter months treat adenium like a cactus ...cut back watering to once every 50 to 60 days

My DR plant was doing fine and has started new growth frim the caudex. Now the branches and stem feel to be getting soft to the touch. Should I cut the branches? Should Icut the stem down to the caudex?
I only water it about every 3 or 4 weeks when it it dry I use a moisture meter.

not getting enough light ....

less frequent watering during the winter months is absolutely necessary ..... that is making the stems feel less firm ...the stems will firm up with summer watering

wait until spring, or whenever it warms-up, to do any pruning or cutting .....the summer warmth + more watering will help the plant recover faster
