We planted 2 tiny shrubs about 4" tall about 3-4 years ago. They're still so small, but finally growing at a noticeable pace this spring. Does this sound normal? What time of year is normal for blooms in my area? Even if a fruit never grows, I love the foliage, nice shrubs.

Pomegranates have a very short juvenile period: interesting that yours haven't bloomed yet as they usually bloom in their second year and bear fruit in their third already.
Are these trees in full sun? If no it could explain a lot of things.

Thank you! They're in the sun most of the day, from about 9:30 until around 5:30. It was really cloudy yesterday.

Tiffany my pomegranate is having the start of blooms for about a week now. Compared to my height it's probably 7 ft tall and it started having it's first blooms 3 yrs ago. I should have pruned it but have neglected to do so. All of the blooms dropped last yr, if I can remember to buy a artist paint brush I might hand pollinate. Mine is in full sun.

Thank you! Hopefully it will rain at normal intervals this summer too. I never remember to water stuff back there.

There are two other factors that may affect blooming.

The first is pruning: pomegranates bear flowers on older, mature wood. Heavily pruning them means losing any blooms for a few years and that's the reason pruning should always be minimal on these plants and if possible spread over several years.

The second is soil nutrients. If the soil is too rich in nitrogen you'll see a lot of lush green growth but little in the way of blooms. Excessive nitrogen can be dealt in three ways: by planting members of the brassicaceae family around it, by using a softwood mulch or by suspending all nitrogen fertilization and using PK fertilizers to redress the nutrient balance in the ground.

Thank you! We haven't pruned anything, and do not fertilize grass. It grows much too well already. : + ) I'll put some compost around them and try to remember to water this summer if/when it doesn't rain.

Did you get any hard freezes in winter? That may serve to prune the branches and prevent flowering/fruiting also.

Thank you! I don't think so, the past few winters anyway. Last winter there were some frosty nights, a little ice in the bird bath some mornings, but no days that did not thaw. I think 23° was the lowest temp this past winter. These guys remained unaffected, that I can see, stayed green.
