How does your Dark Desire rose grow? Do you prune down to the ground each year? Mine currently is spiking canes over 7ft tall! How do you keep this monster under control?

I have two Dark Desire - one is own root and the other is grafted to multiflora.

The grafted Dark Desire is/was a little monster. I remember the first year I had to stand on a short ladder to obtain a photo. Was it worth it? Absolutely - I love it. The first year, I pruned it by a 1/4. The following year by a third it's height and last year by a half. I do recall one cane in particular that was a little wonky - that cane was pruned shorter than the other canes. Now it's height is more under control. The next time I prune, I will prune it a little more than half. It produces numerous beautiful flowers.

The own root was a slow grower. It's about 3 years old and about 2 1/2 feet tall presently. It produced 2 flowers last year.

@MargieNY Margie, thank you so much for the response! That is very helpful! Mine is also on multiflora stock and it is a monster. There was not much dieback this year so I was not sure how to go about pruning it. I left some canes as is and now they are over 7ft. Next year, I would prune it as you advise above. I am glad to know that I got the right stock for this rose. It has been a great performer for me as well putting out many blooms over the season. And the flowers are so beautiful!

My Dark Desire was purchased from Palatine and planted in December. It is already over 6 feet tall. Way to big for me. Soon I'll prune it down to 12 inches or so and it will be happy and a lot more manageable.
