Chapel Hill School House, Crenshaw County, Alabama. I think this structure was built around the time of the Great Depression or shortly afterwards. School functions stopped in the early 1960's. After that it was used as a community center, cake-walk fund raisers, as a meeting house for the local VFD, fall festivals, a general store for several years, etc, etc.,. The old school is located across the road from the church that I attend...it's been there ever since I can remember. Part of the "Chapel Hill community"...a landmark. A cool old school, pine floors, lots of windows, and a fireplace in each classroom...standard schoolhouse of the period. It had gotten in rough shape over the last few years, but... Sad

So, you have a big brush pile that's nice and dry and ready to burn? Or those 10 acres overgrown that needs burning off...maybe your pine tree plantation? Or, just a pile of leaves and branches you want to get rid of? Even if there's no "No Burn" warnings in effect and you've done this a thousand times...really look hard before you strike that match, consider possible issues,...then, look again.

Last Wednesday we hadn't had any rain for about a week, and not much then. Winds have been constant for the last week...drying winds. No rain in the forecast. Mid-morning Wednesday east winds were averaging 7-8mph with gusts in the 15-20mph range. A guy decided to burn some brush piles where he'd been clearing old fence rows and treelines out. The guy is a good guy and experienced but...It was *way* to windy.

Yes, very sad. I haven't been over there yet. I've got to fill the baptistery for a baptism tomorrow morning so I'll be looking at it soon. Sad

The fire could have easily been avoided. It's been way to windy to be burning things. But, it wasn't intended, it was an accident. So the cycle of life goes. I suspect if we could give the old school house a bit of human thought it'd rather go out in a blaze of glory rather than collapse into a decayed pile of rubble. Whatever the case, that little crossroads is gonna be mighty different now. Confused

It will likely now always be the crossroads where "you turn right where the old schoolhouse burned down..." Smiling
