Thread OP
MN
A little late in growing season here in MN, USA, but i just built this 32' x 4' raised bed. Ideas on what to put in based on the seeds i have left in the picture? I'll probably break the 32' bed into 4, 8' sections (4 different plants). For sure i'm set on flax for of the sections, the other 3 are up in the air. thank you

You can try the beans and cucumbers now for sure, might get a harvest still. The others I think are too late to start from seed this year but you can save the seed for next year. Watermelon and cantaloupe will need to be planted elsewhere. They are spreading plants and just two of one of those can take up that whole bed plus grow down the side. Same for pumpkin.

Carrots and beets are cool weather growers. The carrots you might be able to plant for a fall crop, beets I'm not sure if you can do fall planting or not but Spring planting for sure.

I agree, it does look great!!! Gardening is also one big experiment so if you decide you just want to throw it all in there this year and see what happens, go for it. That's how you learn. nodding

I agree, that is a very nice planting bed!

I also agree with planting the beans and cukes, and you could put the onion sets in as well; they may not form large bulbs, but you should at least get some nice "green onions." Or, if you like beet greens, you should certainly get a nice crop of those even if the beets didn't have time to form large roots. Smiling

That's one humdinger of a raised bed!!!!! Thumbs up Thumbs up Thumbs up

In regards to the wall, which direction is the bed facing?

Being as it looks like your in Minnesota, that heavy wall will work well for holding some heat. Building a frame for a tunnel would be pretty easy and will extend your growing season a good bit, I would think. Other's in your type of climate should be able to give you an idea of how that would work. You definitely have a nice setup to work with!

Check out your "first frost date" to see how long you have before then. A tunnel will extend the harvest. You're fast approaching "cool weather vegetables" plus you have to consider decreasing daylight hours.

Seems someone recently posted a thread on starting a garden now...cucumber, radish, greens (spinach, lettuce, kale, turnips, etc), green beans, peas, brocooli rabe, zucchini, and suggestions already given. Watermelon and corn *might* be a stretch for this time of the year.
