Hello all,

Could you help me identify what type of philodendron this is please? I am wanting to move it to an area of low light and want to be sure it will do okay.

Hi Benny,

Your plant is identical to a big one I lost to a winter freeze a few years ago but I don't have a clue as to the name. I treated it like an understory-type tropical, with bright light but no direct sun and a moss pole for climbing.

On the by and by, I would LOVE to have this grow up a moss pole. As this plant does not appear to be of a vine variety, how could I train it to do that?

Benny, LOL ... I know little about Philodendrons. I know there are some types that vine profusely and attach to any available support. There are others referred to as self-heading, with stems strong enough to hold themselves in an upright position, but I think in nature all Philodendrons prefer to have trees to climb. Don't quote me on that though as I'm really not sure.

I took a small sturdy tree branch for one of my Philo's years ago, wrapped the branch in coir/coconut fiber and plopped it down in the pot with the plant ... that Philodendron produced tendrils/aerial roots? and climbed all over that tree branch.

Oh, that is so generous and sweet of you to offer me half of your lovely plant but I'm still downsizing (been doing so for the past three years!) so I will have to pass. I think you should keep that plant all together for a nice specimen plant!

It looks kind of thirsty, but the angle of the leaves on these can be deceiving that way. I'm sure you're in a much better position to gauge that. Plantladylin said about the same thing I would say. As it develops, you should be able to see what it "wants to do."

The less light it gets, the more inclined it might be to act vine-ish. If the light is slightly deficient, it won't grow as strongly, and in nature, it would crawl as quickly as possible through the low light on the forest floor until it found something to climb up, to get into more light, where it might change leaf shape or size upon finding sturdy support and more light. That's one of the things that makes these plants so tricky to ID. A same plant in its' juvenile state can look completely different from a mature specimen. Some potted plants never develop past the juvenile state even though they may be decades old.

I have been looking on websites dedicated to houseplants and I am wondering if this plant isn't a Homalomena variety? There is no vine growth habit but a series of individual stems with the philodendron type leaves at the end. It has been kept in low light which could explain the droopiness. I do need to repot it as well. The soil is kept moist via daily misting.

I welcome your thoughts. :)

Hmmm, was going along with the other ID's and didn't enlarge the pic. The veins on the leaves don't scream Philo to me. The way the petioles crease, kind of looks like an Anthurium. Would you be able to add another pic showing where it emerges from the soil?

I'm not sure. If I wasn't so anal about pulling the cataphylls off of my plants, I'd have something to compare. I'm sure someone else has something to add...

I have Homaleomena Emereald Gem and that was my first thought before I enlarged the photo. I also thought of Anthurium but it still reminds me of a Philodendron I used to have. As Purple stated in her first post, juvenile forms of Philo look nothing like the mature varieties. I sure hope someone comes along and can possibly give you a more accurate identification, at least if you could get the genus that would help give an idea of what growing conditions are required.

I would say this is a philodendron, needs more filtered light, and a lighter more airy substrate to grow in with a moss pole to grow up. The plant has air roots showing already which will let the plant climb given the chance. Less light will starve this juvenile plant to death with no benefits whatsoever.

Benny try a south facing window during the winter months, and take it outside into a slightly shaded area like a patio with an overhang during the summer.

Planting suggestions : coconut fiber & coir in hanging basket that allows for 100% drainage, or soil mix of 30% charcoal & bark, 30% composted leaves & other organic matter(coconut coir is ideal organic matter for this), & 40% basic soil mix with slow release fertilizer for leaf growth mixed in...best is something high in nitrogen, & medium on phosphorus & potassium. I use a 26/3/3 mix with micro nutrients. Since most of my plants now are Anthuriums, I have changed my mix to something else 20/30/10 with micros, but for Philos the above mentioned mix works well.

I have spoken to three Produce Mangers & no one knows what plant this is.they think it is a Tropical Philodendron. Please help. Need care advice.

That's a syngonium hybrid, you should be able to sort out the cultivar name better than we can, with the plant in front of you.
