Yesterday, I was in my greenhouse up potting some Anthurium seedlings. I needed to go outside to get something and while I was walking down the path to the door, I found a hummingbird on the ground. Its not uncommon for them to get into the greenhouse. They fly in while I am working, and usually fly back out. This one was laying on its back, I thought it was dead.

I picked it up and it moved a foot, and blinked an eye. I ran into the house with it, my daughter and 2 friends were there, the 2 friends own 13 birds, and one works in a bird shop. We mixed up sugar solution and took a syringe I keep for measuring things in milliliters and used it to mimic a flower with a drop if nectar on the tip. At first, it didn't work, then, the little bird started drinking. You could see its little throat moving.

It took a while, but it finally seems to have drunk enough, and it got perkier. It started moving in my hand a bit so we took it outside in case it tried to fly away. We didn't want to stress it further so we put in in a small empty net pot hanging under a bush out by the greenhouse. It stayed there for a while, then, when I came out to water some nearby containers, it flew into a nearby tree.

My theory is that it got in the GH and couldn't find its way out and exhausted itself flying around looking for the door. I never thought I would get to actually hold a live hummingbird

Hopefully it fully recovered and went about normal life. It was a day to remember in the garden

Arlene I think he was scared to death! But I am happy he flew off. We were expecting the worst. He was so very weak, he couldn't perch for a while, just laid there and vegetated. I guess the sugar finally hit him ha ha!

God planted a garden.
A sweet mixture of concerned delight! Glad it recovered. We had a hummingbird in the house once when I lived in Belize for 5 mos. It was quite a challenge to get it out. I finally had to catch it; was so afraid I would hurt it. There is something awesome in handling such a delicate wild creature.

I have had to rescue a couple when they impaled themselves in the screen of the screen room. It is truly amazing to hold one of those tiny jewels in your hand!! 💖💖💖💖

What a fun experience and memory you have now. Amazing! Yesterday my husband was out in the front yard on our sidewalk right by a Turk's Cap plant. I was up on the front porch and told him to turn around slowly as possible to see a hovering hummingbird on the Turk's Cap (they love that stuff!), He turned around without upsetting the little guy and he flit over to every single 'turban' flower, my husband there all the while, and then scurried on his way to the the TC bush on the other side of the front yard. My husband was flabbergasted as he was only 2' from this hungry little fellow.

Saving a life, what a great experience. I have had to catch a couple over the years to get them out of the house , but none near death.
