I bought this baby today in a 4.5cm pot and would like some help with identification. At first I thought it was a sempervivum, but I think they pup from stalks under the mother rosette, whereas this one has pups appearing between the rosette layers. This is exactly the same form as my juvenile aeonium, so I'm thinking I now have two aeoniums. Am I on the right track? Any suggestions on species/variety?

I think it's a Sempervivum, but I could be wrong.

Ah, OK and thank you @Baja_Costero. Maybe I should have asked on the sempervivum forum...

@valleylynn are you able to advise? I don't need to know every species/variety in my collection, but I think genus is pretty important to get care needs right, so I'd really like to know.

Really like to know what? The genus for Sempervivum is Sempervivum.

@DaisyI I hope you're not intentionally trying to be rude, cos it sure comes across that way. All I want to know is if the plant is an aeonium or a sempervivum, so I can care for it appropriately. I take it you agree with Baja that it's a semp.

If it helps, I think it looks like a semp too.

It looks etiolated (didn't get enough light), so it doesn't quite have the look it would have, had it gotten enough light.

I imagine in better lighting, in time, you'll see it change shape and look more like a Semp.

@Jenberra
I bought a plant a few years ago labeled as 'Jovibarba heuffelii hybrid'. I think that was an old classification that was changed to Sempervivum. However, it's growth habit isn't like the other Sempervivums that I've attempted to grow. It's growth does match what I'm seeing in your photo. It's one of the few Sempervivums I've managed to grow successfully in my location, though one of these days it's not going to survive its tantrums in re the natural weather conditions here. It's come back from the brink several times. Here's a photo taken in June, but earlier this month it went suddenly downhill and portion of it has been removed and tossed and a small section cut off to see if it can be started over. When its doing well, I like it.

No, I'm not trying to be rude, It seemed apparent to me its a Sempervivum so assumed when Baja said Sempervivum, you would see that too. I was confused about why you would ask what genus different Sempervivums were.

Needrain, I have some Semps that look like yours. They are in the shade as they never did well in the sun.

Mine grows in dappled shade and in the current location it only gets a bit of direct sun in various spots for a few minutes at a time, so it doesn't have a lot of exposure to direct sun but it's still located in very bright outdoor light. I've never tried it in direct sun. It's problem is rot when the outside temps are very warm. We got 3/8" inch of rain early this month. I walked by this week and there was rot, so about 4 rosettes came off and were tossed except for one which seemed to have enough good top to trim off and try to root. So far the remaining plant is okay as far as I can tell and the trimmed rosette didn't continue to rot. It's still air drying. This has happened before, so it's not exactly unusual. Aggravating, though. Semps have lots of appeal, but clearly don't manage the climate here - either in winter or in summer. Mostly do fine in spring and fall under more moderate weather conditions.

Ah! It never rains here.

I take that back - 1.2 inches since January 1. Rolling on the floor laughing

Oops, I drafted a thank you to everyone who weighed in, but somehow it never got posted. My bad. Today I'm going to repot my little sempervivum - have a choice of either a good-sized plastic pot or a too big terracotta (in COVID home quarrantine + extended lockdown, so must make do with what I have). Think I'll go with the plastic... Anyway, thanks to you all for your advice - good to know my initial instinct was right! I tip my hat to you.
