tabbycat, your post was fine. Stefan sometimes doesn't choose his words carefully. I think his IDs are right though.

BTW, Welcome! to the Cactus Forum. I love you new plants. Thumbs up

You posted the first one on Aug. 24 and got the ID, then posted this thread dated 2 days later, Aug 26, exact same ID request and now another exact duplicate thread started on Sept. 1st in the Plant ID forum.
Just wondering if you are not seeing the replies to the other threads? Do you start on the Home page to see threads with new posts?

Hi Calif_Sue, I see many others here asking for IDs . I posted a second time by accident which really stirred up feathers. Who'd guess people have nothing better to do than keep count. On my own I continued down list of forums to 'ID plants' where I got a good response that lead me to ID the fuzzy one correctly. You can read complete details & the 2 members who helped on that forum.
The 2 ID names early on here from skopjecollection's were wrong. I will continue to wait & watch for other responses on both forums if that's ok. I tip my hat to you. Trudy in south Louisiana

It would be ideal if we could discuss whichever particular features of Stefan's suggestion were wrong, because I think he's probably right.

There is a very short list of cacti with wool that dense. They are mostly from Mexico and the Andes. The most common Mexican plant in cultivation (Cephalocereus senilis, which you considered to be a match earlier) has a different hairstyle, coarser and straighter and less matted. It may have more central spines (1-5, instead of 0-1). One of the more common South American plants (Espostoa lanata, which Stefan considers to be a match) is variable and there are hairy/less hairy forms, these features exaggerated by conditions in cultivation. If you looked at a few pictures and decided it wasn't a match, maybe you were looking at less hairy plants.

These discussions go nowhere when the reply is a blanket statement that an ID suggestion was wrong, without any reasoning behind why that might be the case. They are most fruitful when people get into the nuts and bolts about differences between plants, the features that make certain ones special or unique, the origins that explain these aspects. Please, everyone, let's focus on the plants and see if we can come to some mutual understanding.

Thank You!

Another thought: often people are concerned about IDs because they want to know how to best care for plants. In this case the care would be the same for all of the plants we have discussed: good drainage and a rocky mix (eg. 50% pumice or perlite), lots of light (the maximum possible amount if these are indoor plants), water when the soil is dry at depth but not much before. Strong light is especially important for hairy plants, both for their health and their great looks.

Another reason people look for IDs is because they want to know about size. Both plants in the original post are going to need bigger pots soon. They both have the potential to become tree-sized in old age, given the right conditions. For now, indoors, a pot that's about twice as wide, say 4 inches, would be good. I realize the cute blue pots are exactly the right size for the original containers, just trying to inject a note of reality into the situation before you start getting too comfortable with them as permanent homes for your plants. Smiling Those cacti will definitely need a new pot within the next year if you don't give them one now.

If and when you decide to repot, wait until the soil is dry, disturb the roots as little as possible, and wait a week afterward to water for the first time.

No one ever insinuated you were in the wrong forum, ID's are always posted in all the plant specific forums, it's never an issue. Duplicate threads also happen, sometimes in error, and often because of IPhone issues as Dave has noted.
I simply noted the 3 duplicate threads because it seemed you weren't aware of them in your response as you implied a member was just annoyed that you posted an ID request in this Cactus and Succulent forum. I even asked if you were seeing the replies or if you go to the Home page to see updates to threads and I asked that as some members bookmark their favorite forums to always come on when returning to the site rather than start from the Home page.
Baja makes the valid point of trying to keep discussions in one thread so all the details of the plant and the pros and cons of suggested ID's can be discussed. It's a great learning tool for all members. Thumbs up

Baja_Costero A special thanks for all your valuable info. Your 2 points were what I was IDing these for. 1. best care & 2. eventual size. I greatly appreciate your repotting advise since I will do it in about a month having given it 2 months to acclimate to a window sill indoors in a west window. Would you have any ideas of the ID of short blue green starting to twist a bit ?
